High Functioning Sociopath (HFS)

So you people are probably wondering who HFS is. Well she's a friend of mine who was originally gonna get the very cool name Baroness von Fulkerson but nooooooo. She (okay there is a kinda sorta reason I said 'yes' too) She just had to be 'High Functioning Sociopath'. And because it's a pain to type HFS is the abbreviated term.

Behind The Name

Sherlock. She got me into the show and in episode one of the first series "A Study in Pink" Anderson is corrected by Sherlock that he's not a psychopath but a 'High functioning sociopath.' (Do your research!) And well, for some other odd reasons she and I decided that her being HFS is pretty okay. (But I'll be damned is Baroness wouldn't be more fitting and cooler).

This also gives her an excuse to refer to me as 'Freaking watson Junior' which is a very long story in which I'll not tell you any right now. But if I get people in the comments besides her calling me that there will be hell to pay.

A Bit of This and That.

So some Monday random.

*Sherlock, I'd like to correct my friend who in comments is the 'High Functioning Sociopath' We have TWO episodes to go in Sherlock. 2.

*I would be posting my vacation pics but alas I've lost the effing camera to computer cord and I'm really F***ing annoyed!!!

* 'High Functioning Sociopath' (who would otherwise have an awesome name if she/I hadn't insisted on that name. I might abbreviate to HFS.) Would like me to comment on the show Merlin. A newer telling of the Legend of King Arthur. I do enjoy the show more than I had thought I would. It's actually really nice. (Fan fics, Can't you just see them? *cough cough* Inside joke for HFS.) ;) HOWEVER, nylon shirts, skimpy tops, Morgana's halter top, chain mail, armor, a NON-FRENCH Lancelot du Lac, the color red EVERYWHERE, polyester blends, are just a FEW of the problems I have with the show, (had to mention the HFS. And you need to read the friggen Legend anyway SO YOU KNOW WHO MORDRED IS JEEZ! (The Mists of Avalon work too) just find out more of the original telling okay?)

*With HFS I've got four more episodes of Jane Eyre to go.

*I'll do a longer vacation post later.

*I went to look at the boats in Valdez and wanted to report some of the cooler named ones: The Dawn Treader, Shadowfax (bonus points if you can name where those names are from HFS, your answers don't count.) Merlin, Killin' Time, Enterprise, Infinite Grace, Morning Light, The Boat, Freedom Dancer, Knot Again, Wind Musher, My Boat, Jade Dolphin, The Half Cup, and English Maiden are just a few.

Sherlock: Review

I don't make it a habit to post on Sundays. I generally avoid this. I have virtually promised myself that the Sabbath would be a day to not worry about posting.... Oh well. I recently watched two new episodes of Sherlock and decided to write a review up for the two episodes.

The Blind Banker

In this episodes Sherlock has discovered a Chinese number system which is also being used as a cypher by a Chinese smuggler gang known as the Black Lotus.

The story starts with a woman who performs a ancient tea ritual for tourists. She later disappears without explanation. Sherlock is then called to a bank in which the symbols: 一 and 〥are painted in yellow spray paint on the walls of a dead man's office. They then go find the man who's office they were in. They find him dead, the new police detective thinks suicide but Sherlock, who's right, thinks it's murder. But they cannot figure out how he's getting in. All while this is going on John get's a job at a clinic. Where he finds himself attracted to the lovely doctor in charge. There are a few more murders and some black origami lotus blossoms left as a warning to victims. Sherlock almost dies, mostly from his fault. John ends up with a date with the pretty clinic doctor in which Sherlock gets them to go to a Chinese circus. They have a swell time until later when they think Watson is Sherlock and his date almost dies..... And I highly doubt she's going out with him again. The leader of the group escapes and much to Sherlock's chagrin.

The episode was intriguing and well paced. Hints of humor keep the tone. Not too much to note or anything. But don't worry I've got another episode. (I also haven't read the story that accompanies this one....)

A Scandal in Belgravia

Based on the Holmes story A Scandal in Bohemia Sherlock meets his match, The Woman.

Irene Adler is a dominatrix, and not just in her free time it's her job. There are, however compromising picture's of her and a female member of the royal family. Sherlock is to get these pictures from her and to Mycroft for safe keeping. He goes to her "Place of business" dressed as a priest. Little did he know he'd get in regardless of whether John hit him or not. He goes in only to have a naked Irene enter the room. As she's seducing him John walks in. (For some reason the thought of Leia kissing Han when C3PO walks in, in The Empire Strikes Back comes to mind.)But unlike everyone else Sherlock is unable to figure out anything about her. And is drawn by her intelligence. She dies leaving Sherlock despondent by it. In the end we find she was in connection to Moriarty, the "Consulting Criminal".

I disliked the portrayal of Irene Adler, once more this fell into the stereotype of women being forced to used their wiles to get information. While I have no complete problem with that, after all wiles can be a help occasionally (Gentleman Prefer Blondes, or Marylin in general). I just strongly disliked the idea that Irene Adler, who was incredibly intelligent and in this day and age, could have taken a well paying job, chose instead to basically sell herself as a living. Of course this was all by her choice and she owns her business independently but I still dislike it. This episode is actually pretty funny, I laughed a lot of the time. And the naked Irene only lasts for about fifteen minutes. I highly recommend this episode, I just dislike Irene's portrayal. But it's easy to see Sherlock's fascination with her. Her intelligence rivals his own making her attractive. But you sometimes have to wonder if it's just her brain he's attracted to.

Sherlock

So I've recently decided to try and watch the new Sherlock television programme. While I'm partial to Jeremy Brett playing one of my favorite detectives. I've decided to give Benedict Cumberbatch a try. I've so far made it only to 'A Study in Pink' (based on the story A Study in Scarlet by Connan Doyle.) But the show seems promising. It's certainly a modern and new twist but somethings about written Sherlock still hold true. The drugs are there, violin playing, Mrs. Hudson, Watson, and of course, 221b Baker St. However, there are some twists to which the show is different and intriguing.

Watson, for example still records Sherlock's doings, but in the form of a blog.

Then there are some, well even stranger things that Sherlock does, there's the eyeballs in the microwave, bloody thumbs in the fridge, and the skull. Well throw in "High functioning sociopath." (as Cumberbatch put it.) and you've got the modern Sherlock.

Each series contains three 1 1/2 hour episodes. I'm trying out number two. The show also has elements of humor, making the show less serious and more of a family program. I shall keep you updated.

Camping

Yes that's right, camping. The great outdoors, the feeling of one with nature, the mosquitoes. Yep the mosquitoes are killer this year. They are EVERYWHERE. (for some reason the image of the urbanite with a bag full of bug spray comes to mind. Either that or Niles Crane spraying bug dope everywhere.) But the mosquitoes are really bad. Plus if you add on the fact there are forest fires and that means road detours this is gonna be one very long trip. It's also supposed to be cloudy on Monday when we're leaving and that'll be nice since it'll stay cool(er). It's been getting up to ninety in the shade and that's been real tough on a gal who's only ever really been used to 70-80 degree summers. But the scenery will be nice considering how we'll be driving from interior Alaska to southern Alaska.

We're going to Valdez, a port town in southern Alaska known for it's tourist appeal and the fact it's main industry is fishing. Luckily since it's by the ocean the summer there will be more moderate. But it also entails a higher chance of rain. But the fishing industry is (as Mr. Spock would say) fascinating.

The smoke from the fires makes everything a bit hazy and orange-y. Much to my chagrin as it makes it harder to breath. That's always swell huh? The heat has also not helped this problem by making it muggy in the area where I live. Still making it hard to breath. I've been staying inside and avoiding being eaten alive and breathing in forest fire smoke. It's also ridiculously hot. Sleeping in a t-shirt is what I've been needing to do.

But whilst camping I'm not without the few things I'll need badly, notebook and pen, ipod and headphones, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and aspirin for my head. And maybe for the drive a thermos of hot tea could be nice.

This is a corny 1960's Beatle "Saturday Morning" cartoon thing. I like this one especially. Why does Paul even in cartoon form have to look prettier than me?

Watched this show growing up. Those who are avid Beatle listeners in my audience should get this it especially helps if you know more about them than just the music. For example, their pasts before they were super famous and what happened after the band. It'll make Moko Jono more funny. (BTW the reporter is named Pete Best! That's super funny right. Please tell me if any one else who watches this gets the reporters name.)

S.A.D Day

Singles Awareness Day Day.

The most horrid, over rated, worst holiday of the year. I despise Valentines Day. I just do I hate it. The only good thing about it is Chocolate. I really like chocolate. I mean TV always makes Valentines Day out to be something spectacular. But even if you do all that stuff how could you top that next year. I've been blaring my depressing music and Beatles love songs all day. Ahh the sadness of my life. Don't worry I wont bitch to you about it. And if you have some significant other: don't really care about the awesomeness of your Valentines Day. I've got an excruciating chocolate headache right now. Oooh Big Bang Theory tonight! I get to watch the Valentines Day episode of Wings. So it's not all a bust. Sorry about not posting but 1) My internet's been down and it's hard to post if you y'know... can't and 2) I have had nothing to post about NOTHING!!!! I'm gonna go lie down, take a Tylenol, and think about how great life is.

Ten Interview Questions To Ring In The New Year!

1. If you could travel to any part of the world where would it be?
 I would love to travel to Ireland, I'm part Irish and I'm facinated by the Celtic culture. Ireland is also a beautiful country and so green. It has many interesting landmarks too.

2. Do you have any major aspirations in life?
I would love to publish a book. Either f my short stories or a full length novel. However, I have a hard time prolonging plot without the book becoming tedious. 

3. Are you an honest person or do you shade the truth to suit you?
 I'm generally honest. Obviously there are things I don't tell anyone. But I don't lie for personal gain or to be spiteful. I might lie though, the protect someone from being hurt.

4. Is there a part of your body that you would like to improve?
 No...yes...no, I mean we all have things we want to change but God created me this way and I should be happy I'm here on this Earth. So I have no real qualms with how I look.

5. Do you have any unusual health problems that make life hard for you?
 No. No, none. I mean except for the fact that my life is sort of crazy.

6. Would you ever devote your life to those less fortunate than you?
 Yes, I would. It's important to help those who can't help themselves. I would give up everything I had and devote my life to those kind of people.

7. Do you know your ancestry? What nationalities are you?

 Yes I do know my ancestry, I'm Scottish, Irish, French, German, Hungarian, and Polish.

8. Do you read books in your spare time? If you do, then do you read the classics at all?
YES YES YES! I love classics, Jane Eyre, The Picture of Dorian Grey, Pride and Prejudice, Anne of the Green Gables.

9. Do you like to watch sci-fi movies and programs, because they stretch the mind in different ways than other genres do?
 I love to watch them but not because they stretch the mind.

It Never Ends!

The endless cleaning of life. It seems that just as you clean anything there is a new mess to take care of. I had just cleaned the living room and then two days later TWO days it looks as if I had never cleaned it before in my life. I feel as if I have no control over my life sometimes as if I can't control anything. I wish I could be like Jeannie in I Dream Of Jeannie just blink and have it all done. I mean it would take max 2 minutes to have it all done. That would be like heaven on earth. But alas I don't have that power and will have to take at least an hour to clean up. But it's really worth it to sit down afterward with a cup of tea my needle work and Monk or a book and just enjoy how clean it is. I've got to go do that so I can enjoy the new year. And as I look out the window I notice the light of outside fading It's going to be night fall by four so I'd better go get that done.

Thanksgiving and Thankfulness.

Well yesterday I had Thanksgiving dinner with my mom, dad, brother, and  my cousin of whom I've never met before. We had gone out to eat and we went to The Pump house because they have a buffet and it's just easier for all of us. We got our plates and sat down. Now, because my father isn't very religious we don't often say grace when we eat together. Plus he's of a different religion than my mom, brother, and me. So we started eating and my cousin just HAD to say that he's more elegant. Sure he made us say grace. I did not have the best Thanksgiving. I had to act much more prim and proper. I couldn't even have normal conversations. He then showed us pictures of his children. He complained about his almost "ex"-wife. And then he almost got fresh with the waitress just because he cleans her businesses rugs. He realized we were there and stopped himself.

A few more things to mention:
*He forgot my name
*He originaly wanted us to expand the number to ten people when WE were the ones who invited him.
*He drove his company truck there.

Okay so enough Bitching here's what I'm thankful for:

I've been reading a lot of books lately. Such as Growing Up Again, Life, Loves, and oh yeah Diabetes by Mary Tyler Moore, The Once and Future King, and, 1984. IMHO all are good books.

I've been gone for a while, miss me? I've been pretty busy (errr reading, sewing , knitting, going to the library, watching TV.....) But I'm here and that's all that matters.

How's fall for all of you? Here in Alaska it's pretty but we don't have any deciduous trees so the colors are pretty much brown and yellow. It's also getting darker at night and you can go out in broad daylight with a sweater on and have it be chilly. It also smells like berries. It's also time to pull out winter clothes now that the temp doesn't get over 70. It did one day... it was nice.

The World

Sometimes I think of the world as something of a hypothetical nature. Neither here, nor there. Sometimes the world feels like we think it up in our heads and sometimes the world. Just. Is. Because sometimes reality is stranger than fiction. Life is stranger than fiction... sometimes.

I've been watching X-files, Twilight Zone, and reading a book about the unexplained. It made me think of the world and life. Now understand I'm a God fearing Christian. but I wonder about the meaning of life and the universe. How we try to explain the unexplainable. The remarkable, and the incredible. All I have to say is: life is merely... strange.

The Doctor

I don't know if I've mentioned this yet but I'm a Doctor Who fan. I've been looking at ThinkGeek and was looking at the merchandise. It's awesome! They have TARDIS mugs, bathrobes, cookie jars, and money banks. They also have sonic screwdrivers, board games, sticky notes and fun tees. I recently watched an episode of the 9th Doctor when they went back in time to WWII and this child was "attacking" people.
